A very belated blog challenge post...

Hello crafty peeps and welcome to my crafty nook! I hope you are all well and have had a good Easter etc. Sorry it's been so long since I last posted, hopefully I'll be adding posts a bit more frequently once I've got a few things sorted out in my home life. Apart from the odd day it's still a pretty miserable start to spring but at least it's getting lighter (sort of!) so we can enjoy the natural light for longer. It doesn't really make much difference to my crafting because my crudy is north-facing and I can't actually reach the windows with any ease so I tend to keep the curtains closed most of the time, once the weather has warmed up (we still have the odd frosty/foggy start) I'll be opening my window to get some air in which will be very welcome.

 Michele and I finished our cards for last month's challenge within a week of the last post being added but I've not had the time to add them here before now - a huge apology to Michele and my lovely readers for the delay.

For some reason the Christmas photos and the top photo have saved the right way on my PC but have come out the way shown when I add them to the blog - I'm really sorry about this but I can't alter the orientation. For her three Easter egg cards, Michele has used the blossom basket dies that came free with Die Cutting Essentials magazine a couple of months ago. I'm very impressed with Michele's cards because in all honesty I really disliked the basket die that came as part of the set though I like most of the other dies but Michele has to managed to make it look really good and I'm now quite looking forward to using it myself at some point. I love the embossing folders she's used on her cards too especially the script one and the green glitter card on her second card adds that lovely shimmery accent.I love the images and colour palette of the Christmas cards, they have a really contemporary feel to them. A fantastic set of cards as always Michele.

My first card was made using a freebie called Butterfly Dreams from issue 173 of Simply Cards & Papercraft magazine. The leaves were made using a generic die from my stash and the tree branch was actually a tree stamp on it's side. The sky was coloured using Broken China distress oxide ink (I now own two oxide inks and I love them!!!) and a couple of cloud masks. The ladybird and sentiment were from another magazine freebie and I added some glossy accents to the ladybird to make it stand out more.  My Christmas card was made using a snowflake die that came free with Crafts Beautiful magazine, I've had it for months but this was my first time using it, I also used one of the snowflake dies that came with my CC Advent calendar last year to make the smaller snowflakes. I managed to get some glue on the background that looked awful once it had dried and rather than starting over again I added dabs of Dovecraft glitter glue all over the background to disguise it. My final card is a circle swing card decorated by a die set that came free with Diecutting Essentials magazine issue 32 called Woodland Friends and has a distress inked background. I used the circle swing die set that my lovely husband bought me for Valentine's Day to cut the card blank out and the circle sentiment. I added panels of wood grain paper from my stash.

I hope you like our blog challenge cards. This month's challenge is another magazine freebie but this time using the Tonic Studio Flip Flop card dies that came free with last month's issue of Diecutting Essentials Magazine, we'd like you to make a minimum of two cards using this die set with one of them being a Christmas card, you can use any items from your stash but don't go out and buy anything extra - apart from the magazine of course!- if you join in because our challenge is about encouraging you to make use of what you've got not an excuse to buy more stash (and who needs an excuse to buy more lol). If you don't want to spend a tenner on the magazine (and I wouldn't blame you to be perfectly honest) then it is possible to make a flip/flop card using any layered die in your stash. Google flip flop cards and see where it takes you or check out a video or two on YouTube - this style of card was very popular about four years ago and there are loads of videos to choose from. If you ask nicely I might even do a step by step photo tutorial for you using a basic shape die *winks* it will have to wait until I've sorted a few things though. March Blog Challenge

Hello crafty peeps and welcome to my crafty nook! I hope you've all had a good week and if you're affected by the bad weather, you are managing to keep warm and safe. I've only been out in it once on Monday when my husband and I went to babysit our nieces. The youngest two were fast asleep by the time we got there and didn't stir all evening. I enjoyed spending some quality time with my eldest niece on my husband's side of the family, admittedly she spent most of the time playing with her phone but she did give me a big hug when she went up to bed which was lovely. I did manage to catch a bit of a chill while we were out and my hubby did too so we are both feeling very sorry for ourselves at the moment lol.

Michele has set the challenge this month and it's a good one - we are challenged to make two cards this time using mostly magazine freebies and the theme is "seasonal". To reflect the weather here in the UK and the fact that it's still winter one should be a Christmas card (great for keeping on top of those Christmas cards that we'll need before you know it!) but she would like the other to be a lovely spring card - it's Mothering Sunday next weekend and Easter a few weeks after that so it would be great to see cards for those. We'd love it if you joined in, I'm afraid there's no prize for entering just the satisfaction of making two gorgeous cards using your existing supplies - I know a lot of us get almost as big a kick out of buying as we do creating crafty goodness so this is a chance to save some pennies by shopping our stash! Plus it's an opportunity to get some cards made that we might otherwise leave until the last minute like Christmas cards (I'm so guilty of that usually but I've already made 20 Christmas cards!) I'd really like to make Easter Cards for my family and friends who didn't get Christmas cards for the second or even third year running *hangs head in shame* so this challenge is perfect to inspire me to start making Easter cards. FINALLY!!! Blog Challenge Cards

Hello crafty peeps and welcome to my crafty nook. I hope you have all had a brilliant weekend, we are bracing ourselves here in the UK for a spot of nasty weather with freezing conditions and even lightening storms forecast in the coming week, there's a possibility that it may last until the middle of March which isn't good news. If it is as bad as predicted then I may not be blogging as often because I'll probably invite my mum to stay with us. Our flat is a lot easier to heat (hers doesn't even have central heating just ineffective wall panel heaters that are designed to heat unused rooms to prevent pipes from bursting!) even if it's not in town like hers is (making shopping challenging - thank goodness for being on a bus route AND internet shopping!). If she does stay over she'll be taking over the lounge as we don't have a spare room but the put you up bed is comfy enough and we have spare bedding etc, the downside of it is that the computer is in the lounge and I like to write blogs etc late at night and my mum likes to go to bed early so unless I change my writing habits I'm not going to be able to add blogs like usual. Of course she may choose to stay at home so it might not even be an issue - watch this space!

Let me apologise to all my readers and especially to my fellow blog challenger Michele for the delay in getting this blog post up. Michele sent me photos of her gorgeous cards more than two weeks ago and it is totally down to me that they've not been shared before now. There were some extenuating circumstances (losing my mojo, then one of the finished cards, running out of batteries then getting new ones not realising that re-chargeable ones need to be charged before first use lol) but I should still be more organised when it comes to crafting (and most other aspects of my life really). Anyway we'll start with Michele's gorgeous creations.

Michele's first card is the CASE card and is copied from the one on page 67 of the magazine.

Isn't it lovely? Her second card is her non-CASE card and is a very sweet Christmas card.

I love the way Michele has managed to turn a very floral embossed image into a frosty Christmas design while still retaining the wreath elements. I absolutely love the silver snowflakes - very apt considering the forecast and a great addition to a card that would be perfect for batch making (you could use different colours for the embossed panel - white would look stunning especially if it was a shimmery white cardstock such as Centura Pearl hint of silver).

Here are my two cards - my CASE card is more an inspired by than a true CASE card as I wanted to make it into an easel card and I didn't have some of the components needed such as the scalloped circle die cut and the same card stock colour.

My inspiration

As you can see, the butterfly, flowers and placement on the embossed image are the same as the inspiration card but I used Core'dination card in green and sanded the embossed image back using some sandpaper. The flowers, leaves and butterfly were diecut out in white then coloured in using Promarkers. The easel card was made by folding a piece of white card in half and placing it on a Bigz circle die with the folded edge slightly below the cutting area so it didn't cut through both layers at the top. It makes an imperfect circle but as another circle of the same size was layered on top, you can't tell. The easel part was made in the usual way.

As soon as I saw this magazine freebie I knew I wanted to make a non-floral card with it. One of the things I dislike about the freebies you get with craft magazines is that they often lack originality - around half of them are floral, a quarter are Christmas and the remaining quarter cover everything else like men's cards and kids. I'm not actually a huge fan of florals as I like to make cards that reflect the recipient's personality (hobbies, favourite colours, animals etc) and flower cards seem a bit generic in my mind. Stars are gender neutral so a bit of a favourite for men's cards if I'm unsure of their likes or if I don't have anything suitable that they would like (for example it was my brother-in-law's birthday on Friday and he likes penguins and tartan - both are Christmas items and I couldn't get what I had in my stash to work on a birthday card so I made him a card with a starry background and a spaceman with a die cut star on the sentiment). This card was a good way to use up some of my scraps too as I die cut a lot of various sized stars to cover the floral elements of the embossed wreath. The wreath was embossed into some navy blue Core'dinations card and lightly sanded to highlight the wreath. The stars were die cut out of scraps of holographic card and the tiny stars were punched out of rainbow holographic card - in that case I used the perforated strip from the top of a 6" x 6" card piece taken from a paper stack (The Works, sadly no longer available as it was only £1.50 for 24 sheets of foiled card stock including the rainbow holographic card, I really wish I'd bought loads of them now!) I stuck the stars over the floral elements of the wreath as shown and added some of them with foam squares for added interest and also a scattering of the tiny stars on the unembossed areas. The sentiment was from my stash and heat embossed directly onto the topper piece.  It says reach for the stars but isn't very clear as I don't own any fine detail embossing powder. I made matching envelopes for both my cards using my envelope punch board by WRMK.


I hope you like Michele and I's cards - it was a really interesting challenge as neither of us CASE cards very often and I love the way we both chose to make non-floral cards for our second cards. I'm not sure what our next challenge will be - I think I might 'challenge' Michele to come up with a theme. Once it's been set, I will share it on here. Blog Challenge!!! UPDATED.

Hello crafty peeps and welcome to my crafty nook! I hope you are all having a good week and if not don't worry it'll soon be the weekend. Michele and I would like to invite you to join in with our blog challenge - we've had a long break so thought it time to start challenging each other and you to dig deep in our stashes and make some cards/projects! This month we've decided to use the gift that's free with issue 173 of Simply Cards & Papercrafts magazine which is currently in the shops priced £5.99. There are a couple of free downloadable images that go with the covergift so feel free to use those in your cards. The challenge is in two parts, the first is to make any card you like using the free gifts and basics from your stash (card, backing papers etc) and the second part is to CASE a card using the free gifts either by Copying and Sharing Everything from a card in the magazine (please give the designer name and page number details) or if you've seen the free gift used on any sort of social media - Facebook, YouTube, Pinterest etc then please provide a link so we can all see where you got the idea from. Ideally the cards should be as near to the original as possible but don't be afraid to add your own twist if you want to (more of a scraplift card than a CASE one) especially if you don't have the exact materials as the ones used in your inspiration card. I am very excited to see what everyone comes up with and love the idea of a CASE element as I rarely copy exactly. Please please though remember to credit the original designer as intellectual theft is as bad as physical theft and I'm sure none of you would do that!

UPDATE: I suddenly realised while watching the tv that I'd not actually added a closing date for the blog challenge - it's in just over two weeks 14/02/18.

News and a couple of cards.

Hello crafty peeps and welcome to my crafty nook! I hope you've all had a brilliant weekend - it was International Card Making Day on Saturday - did you make any cards? I didn't actually make any on the day but I did have an overnight crafting session last night.

First a couple of bits of good news, to start with my card featured in the last post was shortlisted for the competition I made it for. I didn't win but I'm absolutely thrilled to bits that it was shortlisted as there were some really good entries. My second piece of good news is that my lovely wonderful husband has treated me to a brand new Sizzix Big Shot machine (£55 from Amazon) and it arrived today!! I am very excited and looking forward to finally being able to use my intricate dies without having to shim it to death! It's a different colour to my original machine and has a tabbed extended platform rather than the solid platform with a removable plastic shim which might take some getting used to, I'm going to try and mend my old machine and see if my mum in law would like it, she's not a papercrafter as such but likes to sew and make things for a doll's house that my dad in law has made for her. I know you can get dies to make quilting shapes and other stuff which might make her life easier otherwise I might get some replacement cutting plates and offer it to a craft group/charity in the area who may be able to use it. I am really grateful to my husband for getting it for me, it was £55 which doesn't sound like a lot but is probably more than we spend on electricity in a month and we don't have a lot of spare money especially at this time of year. #feelingblessed

Apologies for the long delay in adding the last blog challenge cards - Michele sent me photos of hers weeks ago but I've had real trouble making the cards this time round, part of it was my usual procrastination but part of it was down to things going wrong with my projects. I decided to colour the Gnomes in with a combination of alcohol markers and Spectrum Noir Shimmer pens and I had a lot of bleeding outside the stamped outlines even though I was extra careful and used a card suitable for both mediums then I'd make a card and absolutely loathe it so had to start again about a dozen times.

Here are Michele's gorgeous creations.

Aren't they fantastic? I love the way Michele spelt out XMAS by nestling the letters in the Gnomes' beards and the Anniversary card is so sweet! I really like the heart shaped tree slice in the background.

This month's blog challenge is to use the card kit that came free with issue 175 Cardmaking & Papercraft magazine to make as many items from it as possible. You can use additional card stock from your stash and any dies, embossing boards, embossing folders as you want to make tags, ATCs, boxes, bags and of course cards! You can also use other embellishments like ribbon and twine etc to give the items a finished look but the challenge is to be left with only tiny scraps by the end. Because this is a big challenge it's running until the 31st October and as always please feel free to join in - there's no prize apart from the satisfaction of having done a job well done and freeing up a tiny bit of space in your crafty nook! I'm really looking forward to seeing what Michele comes up with this time and I'd love to see your creations too. New Month, New Challenge.

Hello crafty peeps and welcome to my crafty nook! I hope you are all well and looking forward to the weekend. It's been a lot quieter in my crafty nook, I've not done any crafting apart from a few messing around sessions that resulted in very little apart from a strange chemical odour that's been hanging around for a while - I did have a bit of a play with some acrylic paint writers that I bought from The Works (the snow writer is lovely apart from it dries clear not white as I was expecting, the gold one's okay but the silver one had separated and isn't usable - one of the downsides of purchasing online) so I think the smell may be down to that.

It's been a while since Michele and I did a challenge, I think doing two a month on top of our usual crafting burnt us out a bit and I personally haven't got my crafty mojo at the highest level at the moment so for the next month we're going to just have one blog challenge and then we'll see about upping it to two at the beginning of October. Michele and I have decided on a theme for this month and it's a two card challenge so it'll run until the 30th September. As usual there isn't any prizes just the satisfaction of challenging ourselves and taking part but if you'd liked to follow along we'd be delighted to see what you come up with.

Issue 150 of Papercraft Essentials comes with a sweet Gnome themed stamp and die set called Enchanted Corner, there's a bit of controversy about this month's covermount gift because the Editor's letter states that there is a paper pack as part of the 'free gift' but if you subscribe it's not included however if you purchase the magazine from Tescos then they are included. If it says in the Editor's letter that the free gift includes a paper pack then it should include one for everyone, not just those people prepared to buy it from Tescos - it's caused a lot of upset on Facebook and it's been reported to ASA because it may be false advertising. PP have tried to smooth ruffled feathers by offering it as a 'free' download but that's useless to people like me who don't have a printer. As much as I like Papercraft Essentials magazine I'm seriously considering cancelling my subscription with them and potentially all the other Practical Publishing titles I subscribe to as well because I feel very let down by them. Anyway mini rant over.

To get back to the challenge, as already stated this month is a two card challenge. PE have actually made the free gift an all year rounder (love when you can use Christmas stash for other occasions!) so the challenge is to make a Christmas card and a non Christmas card using the stamps and dies. Obviously if you have the paper pack feel free to use it but if you don't then you can craft your stash (i.e. don't go out and buy anything specially - it's not what these challenges are about). The cards can be any size, any shape and any theme for the non Christmas card but must have the Enchanted Corner stamps and dies as the main focus. One of the things I really love about this stamp set (apart from it's total cuteness!) is it has a little wooden sign that's been left blank so you can add Santa's Workshop or North Pole on it - the latter is a real blast from the past because when I was a little girl we were told that Santa or rather Father Christmas lived at the North Pole not Lapland as kids are led to believe these days. Kudos to the Finnish for coming up with that particular money spinner but I'm rather fond of the idea of an inaccessible Father Christmas working away all year round with his elves rather than one that spends his time with tourists. *winks*.

Hello Strangers......Part Two

Hello crafty peeps and welcome to my crafty nook! I hope you've all had a brilliant weekend, I spend a lot of mine trying to make a card for my husband who is celebrating his birthday today (Monday). My crafty mojo is on a go-slow at the mo (lol) so it took quite a while to come up with an idea for his card and even longer to make it - I'll be sharing his card in another post (aren't I a card tease lol). As promised I will be sharing my cards for the last blog challenge that started over a month ago. I've not even had the chance to email these cards to Michele (actually the first card I'll be sharing is on it's way to her via snail mail or will be once I've posted it - I'm so behind at the moment!!!) so they'll be a surprise for her too.

Here are some of the scraps I used or drew inspiration from to make my cards.

This is actually only a small fraction of my scraps, I couldn't fit them all on my desk and a lot of my scraps are kept with the full sized or entire pieces for example I have a pack of Centura Pearls card stock in Darks and I keep the open pack in a A4 wallet folder and the scraps in a A5 plastic wallet folder inside the other one so I always know where things are and aren't tempted to break into a fresh A4 sheet if I have a scrap of it in the plastic wallet already. The same applies for most of my other supplies and I even have A5 plastic wallets full of made toppers that I've ended up not using.  Here is the first card I made (and the one that's just an ordinary card because I forgot the second part of the challenge!)

The main piece of torn card stock was already coloured, embossed with a floral embossing folder and distressed before I added it to the A6 card blank. I added Dovecraft red glitter glue to the centre of the flowers and set it to one side to dry while I worked on the sentiment. I stamped the sentiment on a scrap of white cardstock using black ink and then diecut a flower out of holographic foiled card (from my scrap folder) the die came free with Crafts Beautiful a few months ago. I added a gem to the centre and added it to the side of the sentiment strip with a small piece of foam tape. Once the glitter glue was dried I added it to the card as shown. The card looked pretty enough but lacked something so I added a load of sequins from an autumn themed collection and added small red gems to some of the sequins but left the flower ones plain. It's really pretty in real life - really sparkly but it's not easy to pick that up in a photo unfortunately.

After Michele sent me her gorgeous creation (see previous post) I realised I'd forgotten to do half the challenge so decided to make a second card. Again apart from the card base itself which was cut to 8" x 8" from an A4 sheet of card, all the rest of the pieces came from my scrap collection, in this case the Centura pearl darks collection.

I couldn't think what sort of new fancy fold card to make for the second part of the challenge as there's not been a lot of new fancy folds around (at least not ones I've seen anyway), I tried making a central fold stepper card as Michele very kindly sent me some blank ones ages ago but I managed to make a real pig's ear of it and it ended up ironically enough in my scraps folder! I didn't want to risk messing up a second one so flicked through a couple of magazines for inspiration. I saw a Tower Fold card in Papercraft Inspirations magazine but it didn't have any instructions on how to make it and when I checked on YouTube - my usual go to for tutorials - there wasn't anything like it (bet they'll be loads now lol) so I googled it and found the instructions on Pinterest. I can't remember who made either the original card or the one with instructions but I will link the latter if I make another card and share the tutorial - as so often happens this isn't an exact copy as I tweaked it a bit. I'll be totally honest with you, this wasn't the easiest card to make as it involves a lot of cutting with a scalpel and my cutting abilities are poor whether I'm using scissors or a cutting blade so I'm not sure if I will be making a similar card anytime soon. It took a couple of attempts to get it right and I actually discovered that a thinner card works best instead of the thick Sheena's Stamping card that was my first choice. All the panels and stars were made from scraps in my folder and the stars were die cut using a set of nesting star dies, the only non scrap items were the card base itself and two gems from my stash. The card doesn't have a sentiment at the moment but it would be simple enough to stamp one on card, diecut it out in a circle and layer it on the large circle on the bottom right.

I hope you like my scrap raider challenge card with a bonus fancy fold card. We'll be starting another card challenge at the end of the month which will be a lot of fun and involves the free gift with this month's Papercraft Essentials magazine - some super cute gnomes perfect for Christmas!

Hello strangers.....

Hello crafty peeps and welcome to my crafty nook! I hope you are all having a brilliant weekend and a good summer in general. I am very sorry not to have blogged for over a month, I haven't even got the excuse that I've had a lot on though it has been an eventful month, I've just not felt very crafty for a while and even forgo my own blog challenge *hangs head in shame*. Hopefully I'm back on form now and can share a few cards and projects with you. One of the biggest and best things that happened to me since my last blog post was the Baptism of my beautiful God-Daughter Selina Ariadne Flora and I'll be writing more about that event at a future date. I think it's only fair that I concentrate this blog post on the last challenge which was set almost a month ago. My lovely crafty friend Michele made a beautiful card from her scraps and (unlike me - more about it later) actually fulfilled both parts of the challenge and made a gorgeous double Z-fold card. Michele has sent lots of photos as requested so this blog post will be in two parts, the first part will be this one and features Michele's card and the second blog post will feature my cards and will be posted in 24 hours so you can fully appreciate Michele's card on this blog post.

Hasn't Michele done an amazing job? She's used some papers and toppers that came free from Making Cards magazine that she had left after making a Twist and Pop card (it's what inspired me to make my sunflower themed card a month ago).  I haven't been able to add all the photos she sent me as they've saved as PDF files instead of JPEGs and the server won't recognise them, I'm not tech savvy enough to do anything about it but I think the photos I have managed to add do the card justice. I adore the theme of the toppers and this would be a great card for a boy. I really love double Z fold cards because they fold up into a tiny space (depending on what size card you use) but have a lot of 'real estate' for toppers and sentiments. Michele has done a splendid job matching the papers to the toppers (something I struggle with if I'm honest) and even though she's used lots of different designs they look really good together and tie very nicely with the theme.

I hope you've enjoyed Michele's card, I will be back later with my challenge entry - I ended up making two cards in the end because I kind of forgot to make the card a 'fancy fold' and just concentrated on using my scraps lol. You'd think that as it was my idea to add the 'fancy fold' to the challenge that I'd actually remember to do it! *rolls eyes*.
